Fight the Aging Process to Improve your Profile and Eliminate the “Double Chin”

According to a survey conducted by the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, 68% of consumers are bothered by their double chin. It’s a common complaint among both men and women as they age, even if they’re not overweight. And for many years surgery was the only effective remedy. Fortunately there are several non-surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic treatments available to target and improve this area.

There are a variety of factors that can lead to the development of a double chin. One is genetics. Some people are simply predisposed to having a double chin because of the structure of your face, possibly giving you more fullness in the area. One’s weight and how their body stores fat is another factor. Excess body fat can create an extra layer in the chin and neck area. Finally, as you age, your skin loses its elasticity and collagen causing it to sag in areas that were previously tight.

The Aesthetic Center at Medical Associates offers two non-surgical treatment options to help combat this submental fat underneath the chin. The first is CoolSculpting. During treatment, a small applicator will be placed under the chin to freeze fat cells through a process known as cryolipolysis. Because fatty tissue freezes at a higher temperature than other skin cells, there is no harm to the surrounding tissue or any risk of serious side effects. For the next 1-3 months, the frozen fat cells will break down, metabolize, and naturally exit the body.

After fat tissue volume is removed during a CoolSculpting treatment, the loose skin surrounding this area may need some extra attention. This is why the SkinTyte laser treatment is the perfect complement to CoolSculpting. SkinTyte utilizes broadband infrared light technology from our Sciton Joule X laser to effectively reduce laxity within the skin. This groundbreaking technology selectively heats the dermal collagen deep in your skin to tighten tissue and stimulate collagen growth while also continuously protecting the upper epidermis layer with sapphire contact cooling for optimal comfort.

A SkinTyte laser treatment feels a bit like an ultrasound massage. Before the procedure, a gel will be applied over the treatment area, but no anesthesia or pain medication is needed. Then the Skintyte hand piece is applied to deliver infrared energy to the skin in rapid pulses. Patients may experience a warming sensation during the treatment session but typically no pain is felt. Length of the session will depend on which area of the body is being treated. Most individuals require 3-6 sessions. SkinTyte is also great for the face, abdomen, and arms. The length of your session will depend on the size of the treated area.

While many patients notice an immediate difference, the full effects aren’t realized for up to four months, as collagen production takes time to rebuild within your skin. SkinTyte results can last up to two years, depending on your age, diet, exercise, and skincare habits. Sun exposure can weaken the structure of your skin, so a high-SPF sunscreen will help you prolong your results. Be sure to apply sunscreen to your face and neck every day. At The Aesthetic Center, we offer an Age Defying SPF 45 Sunscreen in our line of clinical-grade skincare products because we know just how important sun protection is to the health of one’s skin.
